Adapting to Change and Finding the Silver Lining in Every Cloud

Tuesday to Thursday mornings at Ecole Ronsard are typically alive with one thing exclusively. Students gather in their numbers, bringing an air of excitement as they sprawl out on the grass, picnic-style, with throw pillows and mats spread around, all ready to immerse themselves in 30 minutes of reading.

For close to three years, a reading initiative dubbed ReadOut30 has been a tradition of the school community—a cherished time when students from years four to secondary gather to lose themselves in the pages of their favorite books. This term, however, a curveball was thrown our way. Upon returning to school about a week ago, it was not hard to notice that the usual spot for ReadOut30 was inaccessible.

This left members scratching their heads and wondering how they would keep the tradition alive.

The hurdle necessitated either finding a temporary location for the morning readings or suspending them until the permanent spot was fully restored. The latter, however, was not a viable option.

If there is one thing we’ve come to learn and understand from our experiences as a team, it’s that when faced with difficulty, retreating is not an option; instead, it’s essential to maximize each situation’s potential and identify its silver linings.

So filled with resolve, members united to seek a resolution. Ideas flowed freely, and brainstorming sessions ensued. Initially, some members proposed utilizing the music room, yet it was swiftly realized that the true essence of ReadOut30 transcends the confines of the four walls of a room; thus, such a setting would fail to capture its essence.

The auditorium and classrooms were also deemed unfit, as they strayed from the core that ReadOut30 embodies.

Ultimately, members unanimously opted for an open area as a temporary fix. While not perfect, it offered a venue for members to meet and continue their reading sessions. Moreover, it was outdoorsy, airy, and distraction-free, making it an ideal spot for the reading sessions.

As members gathered at this new spot for the first time, there was a mix of excitement and apprehension in the air. Would this new setting capture the essence of ReadOut30? Would the magic still be there? As time passed and they became immersed in their respective books, it became evident that the essence of ReadOut30 persisted.

Despite the ambient sounds of moving chairs and the shift from mats to chairs, these details were inconsequential. What genuinely mattered was their unity, which was strengthened by their mutual love of reading and of course, the chit-chits before the day’s lesson began.

This is a testament to the resilience of our school community. These students didn’t let a little inconvenience derail them. Instead, they turned it into an opportunity to showcase their adaptability and determination.

In that dining area, surrounded by chairs and tables, ReadOut30 became more than just a reading session. It became a symbol of their collective resolve to overcome obstacles and keep the flame of learning burning bright.

As we reflect on this experience, one thing is clear: challenges may come our way, but with grit and a dash of creativity, there’s nothing we can’t conquer. This teeny-weeny hurdle that ReadOut30 faced this term is not just a story; it’s a reminder that where there’s a will, there’s always going to be way.
